Chapter 22

Isabella

“We have to figure this out,” I said to Roman, grabbing his hand and leading him up the steps toward Kylo’s packhouse.

From his intense, lingering scent on the sidewalk, he had to be here, and we couldn’t wait much longer to hear from Raj. I needed to do my own investigating.

“This isn’t the way to do it,” Roman said, tightening his fingers around mine.

“Do you have another suggestion?” I stared up at Kylo’s door, my stomach in knots. When Roman didn’t answer me, I lifted my fist and knocked on the door. “I’m sorry, Roman, but this needs to be handled as quickly as possible. We don’t have another way right now. When we do, we will—”

The door swung open, and Kylo stood in front of us with his hair disheveled.

I gave him a small smile and released Roman’s hand, stepping closer to him. “Kylo,” I said, letting my wolf purr slightly—very slightly so it wouldn’t come off as suspicious. “Can we come in? I think we all have some things we need to talk about.”

When he glanced from me to Roman, his gaze hardened. I grabbed his hand in an attempt to convince him that this was for the best.

And thankfully, he looked back at me and smiled. “Anything for you.”

Opening the door wider, he stepped back and let us walk into his home. It was weird, being here again, and I was … uncomfortable, to say the least. Honestly, I didn’t know if being here was a bad idea or not. All I knew was that I hated freaking waiting.

Once we sat on the white leather couches in the living room, I cleared my throat. “I wanted to apologize. I didn’t mean to snap at you earlier and tell you that I was going to reject you. My wolf is ready to be marked, but I need a bit more time.” I leaned closer to him and grabbed his hand. “I hope you understand that it’s not you.”

Kylo let out a long sigh through his mouth. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have pushed it on you. I can’t control myself any longer. I’ve waited so long for you, princess. I don’t want to wait another moment, but I will, if that’s what you need.”

A moment passed in complete silence, neither Roman nor I knowing what to say next. We hadn’t really come over here with much of a plan other than to gain Kylo’s trust again and figure out what the hell was going on. But gaining his trust could mean so many things.

“Did you get a chance to look in that file I gave you?” Kylo asked.

Pretending that it hadn’t affected me, I shook my head. “Not yet. I didn’t get any sleep last night, so I took a nap today. And, uh, the Moon Goddess visited me in my dream actually. I wanted to come and tell you.”

Sitting up taller, Kylo looked livelier at the mention of the Moon Goddess. “She did?”

I nodded. “At least, the ghost of her or something.
